ccording to the old saying, you can count on two
things for sure: death and taxes. But there’s another
important reality in the lives of gay and bisexual men in the
Duluth/Superior area that can be counted on for sure: the
Tuesday night support group. Since 1992, men have
gathered on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. to talk about coming
out, self-esteem, empowerment, health issues, HIV/AIDS, the
causes of homosexuality, types of relationships, gay rights
history, legal issues, the changing portrayal of gays in the
media, and more. Sometimes there are three or four men,
sometimes 12 or more show up. No matter the number, you
are bound to have an interesting conversation.
The group is facilitated by a volunteer who gently directs
the discussion for the evening. The atmosphere is one of
caring and openness. The environment is chemical and
smoke free. Typically, the evening begins with a check-in.
Everyone has a chance to talk about their week or about a
particular issue that may be affecting them. Usually, the
check-in is followed by a discussion topic. Sometimes, a
video clip will be used as a springboard to conversation; or a
brief article or some research will be shared.
So, plan on joining us on Tuesday nights, 7-9 p.m., at
the Building for Women, lower level. There is sure to be an
interesting and supportive conversation. You can count on it.
